Captain Fred has been a fisherman his whole life, shaped by his earliest memories of casting lines at the age of four and the lessons his grandfather taught him about life on the water. Growing up in Houston’s Third Ward, he went on to become a classically trained musician and longtime public school teacher, but the call of the Gulf never left him. Today, he is widely recognized as one of the only Black commercial fishermen working along the Texas Gulf Coast and the driving force behind Captain Fred’s Seafood—a business he started to share his daily catch with Houston’s restaurants and community. Despite barriers in the industry and the challenges of navigating complex licensing, he brings in fresh fish, sheepshead, black drum, and more straight from the bay to your plate, all with passion, pride, and a commitment to exposing others—especially young Black Houstonians—to the rich opportunities and traditions of commercial fishing.
